The Great British sitcom is dead. Apart from a few last dying gasps - The Royle Family, Dinnerladies, The Office (and even those were a few years ago), there's arguably nothing that stands out as a great sitcom now.
In the nineties we were treated to a host of great sitcoms - Keeping Up Appearances, One Foot In The Grave, Absolutely Fabulous, and of course The Brittas Empire. My question is this: why has Brittas sunk into obscurity when those others (and some I don't like, such as Men Behaving Badly) have lived on in the public memory? The Brittas Empire was superb, had a great ensemble cast, and longevity, yet I don't think it's even been repeated on terrestrial telly. I'm closing the centre today so we can all gather round, and discuss the subject...

I don't know. I'm sure there are others that have sunk into obscurity as well...

I never saw it. But I've heard good things.
Hey, we can still keep this great piece of TV alive. Can't we?

totally. and, often, tv shows can make a comeback through fandoms. It's on dvd, we just have to convert people.

RD lives on, but that's not really been repeated as much as other sitcoms. Maybe wanting to continue TBE after the original writers finished it, or writing such a poor ending to S7 after S5's original end of run just annoyed people and it's been forgot. It was rarely repeated anyway, unlike some other sitcoms. Saying that, RD 1 and 2 were never repeated until the were digitally remastered.
some 80's sitcoms are not really repeated - young ones is the one I'm thinking about. Although I do find it hysterical I can see how much it's aged. I was in secondary school then and remember all the stations switching off at night, Margaret Thatcher being PM, bad fashion. Maybe they don't repeat the ones which look too dated, or which didn't hit a certain viewing figure the first time, or which they don't think are repeatable. Personally I'd rather see TBE, RD or TYO than Only Fools and Horses - something I've never found funny. I like other things they actors have been in so I know it's not them it just that particular sitcom.
There doesn't seem to be anything good coming through. I did like Two Pints of Lager, but that's probably 'cos I'm less than older than the cast and can relate to them better. Other sitcoms just don't seem to show anything I'd like to see in the clips advertising them, ot they're just not funny. May be my tastes are changing, but I'd rather watch QI than a bad sitcom just for the sake of watching a sitcom. Saying that - going to watch David Tennant on Who Do You Think You Are?
