How many of you know anything about New Zealand? I love NZ - I have family in Auckland and the BOI. And occasionally a bit further up (my cousin owns a fruit farm, but lives in Prague!) My mother and her bloke have just got clearance to emmigrate too (sorry about that - wouldn't wish her upon anyone!) I've been there twice - once mainly to the BOI, but did venture as far up as Cape Reinga, and the next time we got a van and just pootled around up North, then went down as far as Queenstown. Hopefully I'll be back to visit again soon! And you, of course, are welcome to the UK anytime - come visit! Love Elf xx

A) London is not as romantic and cool as it seems. It's dirty and horrible once you get used to it. I don't live in central London, but near it, and it's... oh... Hi Totoffle Sorry to disagree but I often have to travel to London as the HQ of the company I work for is in the City of London. The City of London has won awards recently for being the cleanest City in Britain. David

If you want a truly great English accent, you want the North east of England, none of this London rubbish HI Xylona Sadly the London accent is almost extinct. A recent report stated that the London accent no longer exists. The many Indian dialects have as good as taken over from the traditional accent I am even more upset now cos I tried to type in the word which describes the accent of those people that were born within the sound of Bow Bells, and the site wont let me post the name!!!! I feel victimised My C o c k n e y accent is redundant David

Britain, like most countries, has some wonderful place names. As Elf says, you can see place names on a map of the London Tube. (Elephant and Castle!!). Any good road map of Britain will give you some strange place names, as I suppose a good road map of any country will. The only thing it won't give you is the pronunciations. Scottish and Welsh placenames can be difficult, but there are some English ones which are peculiar. yes. I hear, especially on Brittas, all these names of places that I find very amusing and I wonder if they exist. Chechister? is that one?

I'm watching Coro and amongst all the norhtern accents (which I love to listen to....it's so much fun) there are a couple of characters who apparently have the c o c k n e y accent and say things like "bubble and squeak"

Oh please don't. That is the way the media show us as speaking. It is a travesty of c o c k n e y rhyming slang. I don't know ANYBODY who ever spoke like that. My accent is a mixture of c o c k n e y and Essex. If you are watching Coronation Street, the closest you will get to C o c k n e y is Mike Baldwin and his nephew Jamie. Some of the accents are however VERY exaggerated. David

Seriously? That's depressing Hi Xylona I work in the area of Manor Park in East London and if I walk down the road I am in the minority now. It was officiallly stated last year that the ethnic minority in the area of Newham is White British I feel very sad that MY culture is now almost extinct in East London. David

I have a bizarre Mockney/Brighton/Birmingham/Westcountry accent. Until I go 'home', which is the westcountry (which I pronounce more like 'wezcunree'), when that comes back full force.
When I'm in Brighton my accent is all over the place, and I imitate what I hear a lot. I don't mean to...it's just what happens!
Now people are moving all over the world as well as around their original country accents are heavily diluted almost everywhere, I think.

I've pretty much *got* a Corrie accent, coming from Oop North.
My normal speaking voice (I do many voices, I get confused, lol) sounds like a cross between Jane Horrocks and Fraiser's Daphne Moon. Apparently.

Australians quite often use rhyming slang, off their british experiences/background in convict times... way to talk about things that the guards wouldn't know what they're saying...

Apparently. Ooo ay? D'you say things like "You an' all" and "Our Ashley" and phrases like that? And yes, i like the way Mike Baldwin speaks. Then you have Dev. Now I can't work out where Dev is from(besides India) and it can't be Manchester, his accent is too proper. Is he from London?
