I'm a newbie, so be nice to me - I have also only seen up to the first episode of series 5, so feel free to let me know if I'm well off the mark.....
I think that Gavin is far more insecure than Tim. To start with (series 1-3), Tim does come across as incredibly insecure about Gavin's affections, but we don't really get to know that much about their relationship, except that Tim is prepared to lie about their relationship to Brittas because Gavin (non-verbally) tells him to. (Not an easy thing for Tim because he's pretty out there). By the Jenny episode though, it becomes apparent that Gavin needs Tim in a way that Tim doesn't need Gavin. Sure tim loves him & is possessive, but you get the feeling that Tim is almost Gavin's salvation (there's a huge amount of sadness behind the "it had a lot of advantages at the time" line) - without Tim, Gavin is destined to be loveless & have an element of self-hatred, but Tim is quite secure in his sexuality & wouldn't be alone for long. Tim makes Gavin feel OK about being gay. I think this is also the first time Gavin really admits to himself that he's with Tim for the long haul (there's that line at the end of the Jenny episode where he tells Brittas if things were different he'd love to get married to Jenny, but "it wouldn't work" whilst looking at Tim). It seems significant to me that it's the very next episode that Gavin says he'll take Tim to the dance (the look of delight on Tim's face is incredible!).
Tim is never ashamed of who he is and what he's done, but Gavin is.
Sorry I didn't mean to go on so long - I also hope that makes sense!
