Hi, Mikey -- that's "exxxxxcellent" and just what I meant. My uncle has lived in Washington DC all his adult life and the "tell" (as they say in poker) there is, the locals pronounce it "Warshington" (I suppose there's a bit of "Barth" left on this side of the pond yet!) And if what Elf says is right, we might even be able to find conflicting ones in Gordon's speech -- sev says he has an "Essex L"(L's, at least at the end of a word, are pronounced like a W) , so that's a start.

I finally watched that interview with Chris Barrie, & it's not the one I was thinking of.... Ah well. It's one I've seen recently (in the last 12 months) so if I come across it, I'll post here.
Just out of interest, for anyone interested in accents, there's an excellent example of the difference between north & south in the one with Colin's daughter (might be series 5? The Lies Have It?), where Laura & Colin are sat on the steps near reception - listen to the entirely different way they say "laugh".
