The other evening I was out with some of my friends and the conversation turned to the subject of comedy programs. Lots of classic comedy series were mentioned and I said that my favourite one is the Brittas Empire. What surprised me was that one of my friends said he loves that one too and by loves it I mean he likes it enough to have bought all the series on DVD.
I found this kind of surprising because the Brittas Empire doesn't seem to be the most well remembered of sitcoms. I also found it quite funny because my friend actually used to work in a sports centre. I'm not completely sure where he works now but I think he might still work in one, he's an assistant manager somewhere and all his work is along that same line. ;D

It's a shame that there seems to be a bit of snobbery where The Brittas Empire is concerned - most people I've ever spoken to seem to look down their nose a bit when I say "but it's sooo funny". I suppose most remember the last couple of series, which weren't the best, but they're still good. I'm glad you've managed to find another fan (did you point them here? we could do with a few active members) - I've yet to find anyone who will even borrow my DVDs just to shut me up!

I think it's great whenever I meet fellow fans as well, and generally, when people say they like the show (are not necessarily fans but they like the show). The Brittas Empire has had a lot of wonderful critical acclaim as being one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1990s, and a lot of people are bound to argue and disagree, by arguing that another sitcom was more popular. Maybe so: but this show was huge at the time and because it was a proper situation comedy (Julia St John said it right; one minute a scene might be incredibly moving, then immediately the next second, a huge laugh will come, whatever the situation). And that's probably why a lot of people say it's not that funny. They should really give it a chance.
Chris Barrie-wise, as much as I love Red Dwarf, I much prefer The Brittas Empire. Probably because I grew up watching Brittas when my brother had it on. He didn't really get into Red Dwarf (he finds it mildly amusing but he still doesn't get the hype over it).
