I was watching Red Dwarf tapes the other day (out of order and taped off tv) and I just wanted to talk about them somewhere!
I loved when Rimmer was in that Wild West virus dream thing of Kryten's, and the clap to get out of the 'game' wasn't working anymore, so he was turning his clapping into a little dance! That was just classic, and not something that you really expect from him at ALL. (also reminded me of Maid Marian and Her Merry Men, where the Sheriff disguises thumping of hammers by pretending he's practicing his tap dancing). I also liked how Rimmer ran into the room and was yelling "Scramble!!!" for the emergency drill. You can definitely see a connection with him and Brittas there. Both in his action and their reaction to him! But, much more hyper than Brittas. I also liked how he said 'Marvellous' after the 'morale meeting' he had with the rest of the guys.

Brittas and Rimmer tended to cross over quite a lot...
There are a fair few lines and snippets of things Chris says which has blatantly already been in RD.
Can't think of any right now though...*scratches head*
OH AYE! There's a gag in RD series 3, was it? About the Salvation Army. Both Brittas and Rimmer were part of it for one day...and both ended up causing the callers to commit suicide. Both days were called 'Black *whateverdayitwas*'. I think that was the most obvious.

Between Rimmer and Brittas as characters, I personally prefer Rimmer. He just seems deeper, and not quite as... well... irritating. Rimmer just wants to be loved. *Tear* But as people, I would probably be friends with Brittas, because he never MEANS to hurt people, whereas Rimmer is mean on purpose. Which is always fun, but Brittas is just a decent guy who's misunderstood, whereas Rimmer is a git who's misunderstood.
Who would win in a fight, however, is beyond me. Probably Brittas. After all, he does run a leisure centre.

lol...
yeah, i know that there are many crossovers. I was just admiring Rimmer the other day. He's so cool sometimes, in a weird sort of way. I'd actually prefer to be friends with Rimmer I think. Because a) he's less irritating, b) I think that if you treated him like a friend, he'd calm down a WHOLE lot. c) I don't mind some of his choices of music etc, and I bet that I could find something in common with him somewhere. Or help him pass his exams lol. And at least Rimmer pays attention to people sometimes, and isn't all that bossy.
But yeah, i just love some of the rimmerisms on Red Dwarf! I also liked how in Camille, when he thought that it was a hologramatic woman, he actually mellowed straight down almost straight away, and had a normal kind of voice saying "thankyou... no one's ever called me charming before..." so cute. lol

Personally.... I'd have both of them. Ah. Crudeness aside, I wouldn't mind being friends with either - but probably I'm leaning more towards Rimmer. Because, as Inkling said, if you didn't treat him like a dog you'd get some respect back. I tend to love the unloved. It's a fatal flaw in my programming.

You all have much kinder ideas of Rimmer than I do.Not that I don't love him, but I see his soul as being twisted enough that it's not possible to untwist it. You've got the self-hating destructiveness of someone whose perfect fantasy involves misery and rejection, and spiteful bitterness towards the world. I don't think someone loving him is enough to cut through all that; the self-centredness and petty vindictiveness is too deeply part of what he is. No matter how kind you'd be to him, Rimmer would *find* a way to feel victimised and hit back.
This may explain why I don't read much RD fan fiction. ~grin~ I like the boy as he is: doomed to fail, with a pitiful background but nasty with it.
Gorodn, on the other hand, is wildly insensitive but he is kind and well-meaning and cares deeply about people, something Rimmer never mastered. He can be really sweet, to Helen and Carole in particular. The problem is, I think Helen is the only woman who could cope with him long-term, and she's not particularly stable.

I'm convinced Rimmer can change. If you look at him after he was reincarnated and was 'original' rimmer, you see how much Lister is frustrated with how he's back to how he was.

He changes very, very little over several years of extreme stress - right through S6 he's still showing very nasty personaility traits. "Just being loved" isn't going to magically turn him into a nice person.
Besides, he'd be extremely boring that way.

eh. I still think he would, and i'd still prefer him to Brittas. At least Rimmer shuts up every now and then.

to be honest I've never really watched Red dwarf, but the clips I have seen it looks fun to watch
