Am just wondering if they couldn't get Andre Barnard back so they wrote a different secretary. If they had been able to keep her, would she have been developed to be more like the Julie they wrote or would they have kept her as different?

Julie definitely!!! She just had much more personality than Angie did
And as some1 else pointed out, another straight character wasnt needed

Angie wasn't totally straight though, she did have a bit of attitude... But I quite liked Angie. Julie ended up much better developed though.

If they had been able to keep her, would she have been developed to be more like the Julie they wrote or would they have kept her as different? I don't think it would've been to much of a long shot for Angie to develop the way Julie did. She'd already expressed a fiery attitude in the first episode (that whole coffee cup scenario) and a similar mischieviousness (when she and Gavin thought Brittas was spying in the locker). But I actually preferred Angie. She was sympathetic with the other characters (eg. Carole in the first episode) which Julie didn't seem to be - she seems more out for herself. And besides, Julie's lack of co-operation irritates me. If she hates working for Brittas so much why doesn't she leave?!

I suppose Julie doesn't leave because maybe no other boss can handle her attitude but Brittas being Brittas is always distracted and lets her get away with a lot of things. In which case, Julie doesn't do much either, job-wise! But Julie can be very sympathetic as well, as we saw when Brittas was going to fire Colin, she seemed furious with him for saying that Colin was not important. And it was the same when he was going to fire Carole as well.
I'd imagine they probably would have turned Angie very much like Julie. Like Paulie says, she did have a few of Julie's characteristics, with the coffee cup thing. I think it would have been interesting to see what would have happened to Angie if she had stayed.

I may have to change my stance - Julie's character is growing on me as watch more of the episodes (I'm up to series 4 now). I still like Angie though.
And some of the writing in the second series to me implies that it was written for Angie but maybe the actress wouldn't return so they had to replace her... There was no introduction given to Julie, for example - and the whole 'Julie's Christmas Party' (and associated pregnancy confusion) thing. Maybe in the original script it was 'Angie's Christmas Party'...?

I love Julie, & never really took to Angie - she always seems like a poor Julie substitute to me! Julie just has such a variety of contemptuous looks/ expressions, & is just the epitome of bored secretary. Fabulous.
