he most definatley is.
Mr Gay UK 1997 Final The Dome II in Birmingham was packed with party goers and support teams from all over the country for the final of Mr Gay UK.
The judging panel was brimming with gay icons, Danny La Rue, Jonathan Kerringham, ‘Sam' from ‘Casualty', Russel Porter, ‘Tim' from ‘The Britas Empire', and, Scott Neil and Tameka Empson - stars of ‘Beautiful Thing'. The judges certainly had their work cut out as the competitors were hot, hot, hot and there were 27 to choose from.
Not much else to say there, except that years ago whenI was first looking for info on Brittas Empire I came across a message board topic by someone, somewhere (not around anymore, I've looked) saying that they had indeed seen him exiting a gay bar late one night.
I mean he's just too gorgeous.....

Judging Mr Gay UK and being seen coming out of a gay club doesn't confirm his sexuality. The guy from Casualty was also a judge of Mr Gay UK and he definitely is not gay.
I seem to remember the Board Manager saying that she had heard a long time ago that Russell Porter is gay, but I am not sure if this was confirmed or not.

yeah, i know it doesn't confirm anything. My own thoughts for what they are worth, are that he is gay. This could of course be wishful thinking

unless it is publicly announced it is his secret, but rumours are free, and it would seem that it is very positive evidence.

If he's a private person, then any relationship he's in he would like to remain private. Besides, I understand that actors who play Gay character are often asked to be judges. Not because they are gay, but because the character is and that is seen as positive.

Whether Russell is gay or not in real life, he played a great gay character in the Brittas Empire. Most gay characters on TV were of the John Inman camp kind of gay. Russell played Tim as a 'normal' guy who happened to be gay. Not many TV shows were doing that.

it all adds to the air of mystery around him though, doesn't it?

hey, when i saw this show at 13 or 14 years old, even *i* noticed that they had made him a brilliant gay character. Probably the first show i'd actively watched where main characters were openly gay. So Russell's great!

Whether Russell is gay or not in real life, he played a great gay character in the Brittas Empire. Most gay characters on TV were of the John Inman camp kind of gay. Russell played Tim as a 'normal' guy who happened to be gay. Not many TV's were doing that. True. With British Law, until the 60's everything had to be kept secret for fear of imprisonment. The only 'escape' as it were, was to camp it up and make it funny. Gradually acceptance (or is that tolerance) was reached and the law was changed. Unfortunately entertainment was still in the camp mindset. In someways it still is. There are camp gay men who enjoy showing off and entertaining in that way. I'm glad they didn't send Tim and Gavin down that road. There was enough stupidity with Brittas.
