I've been rewatching all of Brittas Empire, but I left Series 6 for last. It's still the series I like least although there are episodes here that I like including "At The Double" and "Brittas Falls In Love".
"Walk On the Wild Side" has it's funny moments, but it's the one episode that's most indicative of what went wrong with this season. Ridiculous as many situations seem to be in Brittas, this one was probably a bit too ridiculous. Any law-abiding by-the-book character as Brittas has been established to be, he would have never done what he's done with regards to the public right of way. The first thing he should have done would be to consult with his superiors instead of instituting ridiculous policies in the center. One can reason that it would have spoiled the plot, but it's a flawed plot to begin with.
Brittas has also been established to be a bit insensitive, but he would never be so careless with a baby as he was at the start of the episode.
But I think what worked least in this episode and indeed all of the episodes in Series 6 was Penny Bidmead. She's pretty, but for some reason, her character simply didn't work. I'm trying to figure out why. Some of the characters we really like including Tim and Julie all are quite rebellious and answer back to Brittas but we never hate them for it. In fact, when Julie is insubordinate, it's funny!
But when Penny does it, it rubs me in all the wrong places. There seems to be real venom in her voice, a little too reality in her anger. Her words, and the way she says them, are more harsher than how the others say it. I've come to really love the character of Brittas and for this johnny come lately to be so disagreeble I find very annoying. Specially when it's obvious they are establishing her as Helen's new "confidante". It seems forced and leaves a really bad taste in the mouth.
I find myself rooting a lot for Colin, because he always has the right idea bout her.
What do you all think why she didn't work?
And for those who liked her, can you tell us why?
