yeah, it was sad. Though... and I really hope you don't think I'm being nasty by saying this, and don't let me put you off writing, but it... doesn't fully sound like Tim. Tim didn't have a father growing up, and he didn't go away to school, because I don't think he went to university. Gavin went away to a boarding school situation. I do hope you keep writing though! And I know that you haven't seen many episodes yet.

I don't think you're being nasty inkling-in fact I'm thrilled you're able to tell me this. I really didn't know all that and if I had I would have definitely worked with that information. I just apologize for not having all the information before I wrote the fic. But i really do appreciate your criticism.

Well, from what we think, neither Tim nor Gavin went to university (or at least if they did, they didn't complete it. I am guessing this because Tim makes a big deal about Gavin going to a fancy 'Public School' which in England is what you or I would know as a private school. He boarded. And Tim wouldn't be making a fuss about school if they'd been to university, because then they'd be comparing fancy/normal universities instead), Tim was brought up by his Mum. And, it's always been my inference that Tim's Mum doesn't mind Tim being gay. I don't know if she minded at first, but Tim doesn't seem the sort to hide it and it's implied that they have a good relationship, because in one episode Tim threatens to leave Gavin and go back and live with his Mum in Cheshire. So at the very least she overlooks him being gay.

Yeah and also Tim's mum is from Germany. Gavin worked in a different leisure centre when he was living with his parents but from what we gather, there was some sort of trouble and he had to leave. We don't know what though. I think Tim's mum is fine with him and Gavin but Gavin never told his parents. Also Gavin was engaged when he was about 19? I think.

Yep, but Tim doesn't know about the engagement until series... 4? And though Tim knows that Gavin didn't tell his Mum that they're gay together, he assumed that Gavin had told her about him in terms of best friend, or room mate or something. But he hadn't. Gavin got engaged to Jenny because they liked the same sorts of things and getting engaged had it's benefits at the time. It *may* not have been that Gavin *worked* at the gym where the 'trouble' happened, he might have just been hanging around there. The phrase was "There was trouble at the local gym... a court case". And it led his parents to being angry with him and sending him away to I think it was his Aunt's, where he met Jenny and got engaged to her to sort of try and fix the 'trouble'. Then Jenny went back into the mental hospital.

Yes that's right. Tim was very upset that Gavin's parents hadn't heard of him.

Also... When Gavin got sent away to live with his Aunt? Wasn't he still at school? In the first episode of series 6 Tim and Gavin are talking about the rolls royce and Gavin said, 'My aunty used to have one of these you know, she used to send me back to school in it'. Maybe he was bullied or got into a fight or something at the local gym.

Gavin was 18? (I think) when he got engaged to Jenny - I've always assumed (quite possibly incorrectly!) that the trouble he got into either involved fighting or something to do with his sexuality - you have to remember the legal age of consent for homosexuals was only lowered to 18 in 1994 and 16 in 2001! Before that it was illegal to engage in a homosexual act before both parties were 21, and if someone had sex with someone of 18 or so they could be sent to jail for it. And in the 80s the anti-homosexual movement was very strong owing to HIV/AIDS being seen as a 'gay' disease.
Given the debate over Tim's age in the first series (he does look young!) and the fact it was broadcast (and presumeably set) in 1991, you can see how Gavin could have gotten into all sorts of trouble.
(very brief timeline of the law relating to homosexuality, for anyone who's interested - 1967, homosexual acts decriminalised in England between two consenting men over the age of 21. Technically this still makes homosexual sex in hotels illegal!. 1980 - decriminalised in Scotland. 1982 - decriminalised in Northern Ireland. 1992 - Isle of Man decriminalised homosexuality. 1994 - age of consent reduced to 18. 2001 - age of consent reduced to 16.)
When Gavin refers to his aunt taking him to school I've always assumed this referred to the fact that his father was an army officer and probably spent a lot of time out of the country, therefore whilst Gavin was okay at boarding school in term time, he would still need somewhere to go in the holidays, and may well have been packed off to various family members.

So if Gavin had a boyfriend back then he would have gotten into trouble for it? And thats why he got engaged to Jenny?
P.S. Elf, PLEASE write more I love your fics! ;D Hows the ff100 thing going?
