The friend who borrowed all my Poirot tapes finally gave them back, so I was at last able to watch Ms. St John do the flustered flowsy housewive thing. I was amazed at how Laura she seemed even though her character was miles away... But she did an excellent job. Really convincing in a difficult character to make come across believably.
I hate to say this: her eyebrows were evil. I've never liked her black eyebrows/dirty blonde combination, even though I salute her for keeping actual eyebrows in a time of thin pathetic lines, but this time they looked like caterpillars.
It was one of the less good adaptations, though. Usually that series only changes things to insert Hastings, Japp, Miss Lemon and cute character bits, but they really messed around with plot and characters this time, to its detriment.

I've never really like the adaptations of any of Christies works. Some are better than others. The David Suchet Death on the Nile blatently put an inscestuous mother / son relationship when the book paired the son with one of the young female passengers. I caught the JSJ on tv a few weeks ago. It was over half way through and after working out character names was able to pronounce "she did it" but that's only 'cos I'd read the book a couple of times. Will have to read A Murder Is Announced 'cos I think two of the ladies who share a house might actually be a couple, rather than friends / rich lady and paid companion which most of her female pairings are. And am just wondering if Crooked House has been adapted, and if not will anyone have the nerve to do it - the young girl (approx years old I think) did it!
