Maid Marian and Her Merry Men.
This was an utterly brilliant show, written by Tony Robinson of Baldrick (Blackadder) fame, with a lot of blackaddery type comedy involved in it. It also has the guy who played Cat from Red Dwarf, and briefly, Nursie from Blackadder as Marian's Mum.
You all know the story of Robin Hood. How he was made an outlaw, for something rather trivial, and ran around avoiding and confronting King John and the Sheriff of Nottingham, and stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, and his girlfriend's name was Maid Marian.
According to the show, the above is UTTER RUBBISH. Total lie made up by history, who were blinded by the sexist thoughts and the lies of people who couldn't see the truth. The truth that it was Maid Marian who was the leader of the Gang, and that she and Robin were in no way in a romantic relationship!!!
Hence "Maid Marian and HER Merry Men"
It's a comedy show, filled with historical anacronisms (modern things placed in a historical setting. Eg, The Sheriff invents modern things, they talk about modern things which they've changed so it's old fashionedy... they mention modern tv shows etc), and filled with subtle innuendoes. It was marketed at children aged between 10 and 15. But it's VERY obvious to older viewers that they'd deliberately added in things for adults, and as such, it's a show for all ages. The adult stuff goes STRAIGHT over children's heads.
According to the 'truth' of this story: Marian was trying to sell her pet tadpole, Edwina, when the Sheriff accidentally threw a tomato at her and then threatened her, leading to a fight. Her life is threatened so she takes Robin hostage, and they flee to the forest... but she has to come back to rescue Edwina, and the two guys in the stocks that the sheriff was throwing tomatoes at in the first place. Robin was made an outlaw for slapping a guard
"I didn't mean to hurt him!!!"
"oh no. You didn't mean to hurt him. You just slapped him, in the face with a glove, very hard, when he didn't even have his sword- BULLY!!!!"
And it's very funny. The show is also filled with songs, which they randomly burst into.
The characters:
Robin of Kensington, nicknamed Robin Hood. He's a total yuppie, (a medieval yuppie), obsessed with hair and fashion and reading magazines, and going on binge diets. he's also a total coward and very very naive. Also self centered, but generally a nice guy. Would be interested in Marian if she were a little less bossy.
Maid Marian: short, not particularly glamourous, definitely not a bimbo. The brains of the operation. She's very into social justice and equality and anti sexism, anti animal cruelty, etc etc. Feels unappreciated lots of the time. Cares deeply about everyone's welfare, even when they piss her off, which they frequently do.
Rabies: one of the Merry Men. A tall, strong, incredibly stupid idiot.
Little Ron: one of the merry men. A very violent midget.
Barrington: One of the merry men. A very laid back rastafarian. who likes to sing.
King John: well that's just obvious. The King. And he yells a lot.
The Sheriff of Nottingham: (played by "Baldrick" Tony Robinson! totally different role) the reasonably intelligent sheriff. He's very funny.
Gary and Graeme: the guards who follow the Sheriff around. They're often amazingly sweet, especially to each other, and they're "bestest friends" (probably a *cough* situation lol). They're kind of dumb, but they're so nice. Except when they're doing their jobs. According to the show they "both have GCSEs in killing, maiming and biting people's heads off!"
Gladys: little old lady who lives in the village, and is one of Barrington's best friends. She's great!
Snooker: the main male villager character. he's also cool.
Guy of Gisbourne: The King's village idiot nephew, who acts like he's 5 but is 27 years old.
Rose Scargill: Marian's Ex best friend, whos obsessed with Robin... but wants to kill him so she can have him stuffed and put at the entrance of her planned "Robin Hood Experience" themepark.
Um, it's a totally wonderful and brilliant show, so many many quoteable quotes, jokes, innuendoes, pop culture references... and it's a very 'girl power' show too.
