People keep asking me to join Red Dwarf role plays; but I decline; I have NO IDEA how to do it.l
I think some people just join and pretend they know what they're doing....
But I would quite like to learn....I wouldn't mind being a Laura. Obviously.

I'm sorta a teeny part of a role play over on LJ. (LiveJournal) And they do seems sorta fun. I don't entirely understand how it would work on a mail list though... Love Elf xx

Role-playing really is just something you can pick up as you go along. Just think of it as collaborative story-writing.
That goes for message board and chat rpgs, though. Chat rpging terrifies me.
How would a Brittas rpg work? What kind of plots?

I've never participated in one before but wouldn't it be that characters assigned to certain people and a scene is created while we are in those roles? (i'm guessing here folks....)

I actually participate in table top and live role-playing.
In these there is a game world which can be fantasy (think Middle Earth) involving different races, magic and the like, or more modern day. There can be forms of magic, or no magic. In table top there is usually one person known as the Games Master (GM) who writes the plots, keeps the players up to date with the story / plot and monitors that the actions of the players are within the games rules and the game world. In live there are plot writing teams and a number of referees.
Each player will create a character to play choosing skills, etc. as the rules allow. They will have to interact with each other and with any other characters relevant to the plot / story known as Non Player Characters (NPCs). In table top these will be created and played by the GM. In live these will be created by the plot team and played by dedicated people (also called NPCs) or volunteers taking a break from their own characters (known as monsters as in most live events these will be creatures for the players to fight with imitation, padded weapons).
There can be main plots written, but players are free to work out their own agendas. You can now get table top games based on sci fi and horror programmes / films such as Star Wars, Stargate, Red Dwarf and Buffy.
I'm not too sure how an egroup works, but I would think it's on a similar principle - you create a character and start conversing with other people and following orders etc.
I think in BE the game world would be the leisure centre. Some characters, such as Brittas, would be NPCs run by the moderators, and the main players would be staff (probably not the main staff as I can see many of you all wanting to play Tim and Gavin) and customers.
If you want to find out some more info on roleplaying, I can probably suggest some websites. This may help with finding out how it all works.
PS. whats the title of the yahoo brittas empire roleplay egroup - I may join and see what mischief I can cause!!

that's not how they were playing it, as I was actually given Mr Brittas as a character. And Linda as well.

Ah. I probably wouldn't have done it that way. Everyone has their own expectation of how the characters are so others would be upset if they were played differently to how they would think.
Two characters played by one player could lead to them using both characters to further the status of one character. Although I'm probably being cynical from seeing how this could happen.
