I am trying to persuade my friends that The Brittas Empire is really, really funny. So, I was wondering which episode was the best to start with. I'm avoiding the very first episode because table-tennis-man annoys me, and my favourite is the first Christmas special, but that's no good if you don't know the characters. Anybody have any ideas? I love the one with the Romans (Not a Good Day?), but is there a better one for Empire newbies?

They are all good and I'm sure your friends will be hooked with what ever episode you choose to show them! The Romans episode is a good choice, the episodes that I think might be good to show off are The Christening (series 4) Two Little Boys (Series 3) and maybe Biggles Tells A Lie (Series 4).

They are all good and I'm sure your friends will be hooked with what ever episode you choose to show them! Oh how I wish that were true! I've come to the conclusion that with a couple of exceptions, they just don't have a sense of humour! I went for Not a Good Day, & they just weren't amused. Ah well.

Awww what a shame! I must admit that I've caught friends who say they don't like The Brittas Empire quitely chuckle to themselves as the DVD is on in the background! So don't give up hope!

I think you're probably right, I won't give up yet. There's a bit of snobbery involved I think - like they can't admit they find it funny, even though it is. I defy any one not to laugh at the christening practise!

What about series 5 The Last Day? Carole is stuck in Ben's car, the water tank flatttens Mr Brittas, Helen arrives and is 'very very cross' with Gordon until she realises where he is and her lip quivers... It makes me laugh, it makes me cry , it's got the whole group thing and it's just wonderful, so perhaps if the newbies don't laugh they might get caught up in the pathos instead. Hello & Welcome Topsyjane! Nice to have you here.
That's not a bad idea, although, with Brittas dead at the end, I'm not sure you'd want to watch the next (which let's face it, with the explanations for why everyone is still there & Brittas is suddenly alive, is not one of the best).

The Last Day is a such a good episode I think that I would have to add it to my growing list of favourite episodes, but I also agree with Sev29's problem too. Maybe start with the very first episode (and fast forward the table tennis man) so that your friends are introduced to the characters and setting so it needs less explanation from you giving back story??

I have the complete box set, and hadn't seen it for years. I'd completely forgotten just how good the Brittas Empire is. I couldn't resist binge watching the entire 1st series. The best laugh out loud moment being at the end of the 6th episode. Where Gordon is in hospital, Helen chats with Laura about him. Laura says she'd miss him, and Helen gets up and plugs his life support machine back in. That's hilarious simply brilliant writing and playing. If your mates can't laugh at that well. Humour though is after all subjective, one persons hilarious is another's groan.

So I know this is from eons ago but I have to point out that the first episode is what started it all. they were starting from the ground up, new building, new staff, new poultice on Colin's hand....
it also tells you how grating others find Gordon.
that being said, the first episode I saw was the one where Carole gives birth to the twins. the episode I saw that made me fall completely in love with the series was the one when Colin had concussion and his job was to see about heating the pool...

I'll have to do a top five! I'm finding it hard to pick just one! In no particular order:
- Biggles Tells a Lie - The Lies Have It - Laura's Leaving - http://etc - The Christening
