Ok all, Here is My first every FanFic no 1;
The interviewer Mike is taking to his special guest, the author of many best selling children's books. He asks “When did you realise you wanted to write stories for children and when was your first?”
“Well Mike, You ask when I wrote my first story and when it all began! I'll tell you. It all started 30 years ago when I was six, My Mum was working at a leisure centre, as a receptionist, under the management of a Mr Brittas, I lived with my brother and sister in the draws and cupboards of reception, we had lost our home so Mum made one for us at the centre. There were two pool attendants, Gavin and Tim, They were very good 'friends' and loved each other very much, but Gavin had dreams of management and told Tim he had been to his Mothers every Monday night, when in fact, he had been to on an management evening class, when Mr Brittas told Tim what Gavin had been up to and that he had been lying to him, Tim felt really hurt and angry with Gavin, to the point that they had an almighty row and they ended up fighting in the staff room. The fight only stopped when Mr Brittas came in, demanding an explanation to why everyone were lying to him...
Gavin and Tim were leaving the centre after their fight, Tim was still very angry at Gavin and was feeling very hurt as he looked at Gavin and said “I'll see you latter, I need some time to think!” Gavin lets out a sheepish “I'm Sorry.” But Tim turns and walks away from Gavin, leaving him feeling even more sorry for how he has hurt the one he loves.
The next mourning we find a frantic, tearful Carol, her son is missing. “I haven't seen him since yesterday! when he went for a walk up the air ducking!” Carol screams at Laura as she arrives, Laura asks “Who?” Carol reveals that Ben has been missing all night, she is beside herself with worry and is starting to panic.
Gavin walks in to the centre, he looks very tired and worried, “Have anybody seen Timmy?” he asks Laura and Carol, “I have been up all night waiting for him to come home, but he hasn't, He said he needed time to think, when we left yesterday, but, he's not been home all night, I'm so worried! I hope he is OK”, “Don't worry Gavin” Laura tells him, “You did have quite a fight yesterday, I'm certain he's fine and only went to think about things.” With this Colin walks past reception. “Have you seen Ben? Carol asks “Sorry Carol, I haven't, I expect he's playing in the ventilation system again, he likes going up in there.” Colin replies, “Have you seen Tim today?” Gavin asks, Colin replies “I'm sorry Gavin! I last saw Tim yesterday evening heading for the roof! He goes up there quite often, I don't know why?” Gavin starts to fear the worst, “Oh no he hasn't!” he starts to shout “He wouldn't do it! I know he was upset but he wouldn't, would he?” panicking Gavin runs to the roof followed by Carol, Laura and Colin.
They get to the roof door, They find the door its stuck fast, Gavin takes a run at it and it doesn't move, he takes a second run at it and it still doesn't move, Colin grabs hold of Gavin and they both charge the door, it flings open to find a very cold and shaking Tim sitting on the baloney floor clutching Ben in his arms. Tim is only wearing the torn T shirt and shorts he had on yesterday after his fight with Gavin and a soaking wet towel over his legs, But, Ben on the other hand has every spare bit of kit that Tim had in his bag wrapped around him. Carol runs over and picks Ben up “Are you all right, My baby!” she shouts, “I'm OK Mummy,” Ben says “Uncle Timmy looked after me and kept me warm.” Carol falls to the floor with relief that her son is safe and well, Tim tries to move to help Carol, but he can't, so Colin grabs Carol and helps her to the ground.
Laura asks “Tim, What happened?” Sobbing he starts to tell; “Laura, I came up here feeling hurt and upset; I was asking myself, Why would my best 'friend' would lie to me? I have come up here many time before to write, but this time, I was feeling so upset that I was thinking about throwing myself off the roof to my death, so I would never have to see him having complete content for me.” Looking a Gavin, who had his head down with swallow “I was feeling really hurt!”, Gavin puts his arms around Tim and mummers “I'm Sorry.”
“So what happen next?” Laura asked, “I just sat here on the floor and started to write. I was witting away with some new stories and ideas for recipes, when I thought 'what was I thinking about?' I don't want to die! I don't want to kill myself, I love him!!! I have got to go home and try and make it up with him, that is, if he'll even talk to me? I did punch and kick him like a mad man. So, hoping he would forgive me, I started to pack my stuff away in my bag, It must have been around 8:30pm, when I was packing the last of my stuff away, I heard a loud bang on the air vent!” Gavin looks up at Tim “I jumped with a fright but when I turned round I saw Ben at the grill of the air vent, he was crying and he said he could not get out.” Colin buts in “He must have been the wrong side of the fire shutters when the system started to shut down.” Tim continues “He was crying lots, so I said 'Don't worry Ben, Uncle Timmy will get you out', I don't know what made me say that, but I would never be able to look at Carol again if I hadn't tried to help him. So I had to give it a go and get Ben out, I pulled and pulled and some how, I don't now how, ripped off the grill to the vent and garbed hold of him, but, when I turned to leave the roof with Ben, I noticed that in my fright, I had knocked my bag which was holding the door open, the door had slammed shut and there was no way of opening it from our side, we were stuck!”
“Colin” Laura asks, “Can you go down stairs and phone for an ambulance?” While Tim had been talking, Laura had looked under the towel covering Tim and saw he has frost bite to his legs. Gavin was starting to panic as he sees Tim starting to drift in and out of consonance, he starts shouting to him “Stay with me, Timmy, STAY WITH ME!!!!”, Gavin takes off his coat and wraps it around him, “I'm OK Gavin, I'm just cold and tired.” Tim stutters, “We need to keep you talking.” Laura replies, “So what happened next?” Tim stuttering and shaking from the cold continues “I was stuck up here and what more I was stuck here with a kid and I don't like kids very much, I could cope being on my own, but with a child I didn't know how to cope! but I could not let Ben know how much I hated him being here, so when I heard the town clock strike 9 o'clock I thought now this is my only chance of escape. I told Ben I needed to look over the edge to try and shout to Colin, as I knew he should be leaving about this time, I looked over the edge and I could see Colin at the far side of the car park, I shouted as loud as I could but he did not hear me, he was just too far away. 'Dam It' I thought, I'm stuck up here for the night with a kid. I dropped back to the floor and told Ben, that 'I think we may have to ruff it up here to mourning but we will be OK unless it starts to rain', with that it did, 'Dam It!' I shouted, 'I'm not ready for this!', I didn't know what to do, I just started crying, but Ben was not phased by the rain, He just grabbed my coat from my bag and flew it over my head and then jumped back in the air duck, within ten minutes or so, the rain passed and to sky turned to stars. Ben climbed out of the air duck, pulled the coat from me and got my towel out of my bag so we could dry ourselves off.” Tim starts to drift off again, “Timmy, Timmy Timmy!” Gavin cries but Tim doesn't respond.
Ben gets up from his mothers arms and walks over to Tim, “Uncle Timmy stay with me, please don't give up! I love you.” as Ben puts his arms around Tim and he responds “OK Ben, I'll try!” Stuttering and holding on to Ben, Tim carries on, “Ben asked me what I had been doing up here, so I told him that I that I often came up here to write, he asked what I wrote, so I told him some of the stories I had written, all the trails of a leisure centre and the mad manager. After an hour or so of laughing and talking, he said he was feeling cold and tired, so I dug around in my bag, found my jumper and put it over him, I warped his legs with my spare shirt and just sat here cuddling him, I used my coat to cover him, as he drifted off to sleep. I thought about what had happened, Ben isn't a bad lad and I quite liked having him with me, we had talked so much, we had so much in common, we both never knew our fathers. I found my self liking, No, I found myself loving him, the sort of love a parent has for their child. I felt strange but I felt happy, I then started to think how nasty I had been to Gavin, how sorry I was and how much I loved him. I had nothing left to keep me warm other than what I was wearing, only the wet towel so I covered my self with it as best as I could and I fell asleep. I don't remember any more until I heard you breaking through the door.”
Carol cries “Tim, you saved my Ben's life, I'll always be in your debt!” Tim slumps to the floor, he's passed out, Gavin grabs Tim and shakes him shouting “Tim don't leave me, I'm sorry! I'm so sorry Timmy, Please!” Laura puts her arm around Gavin and tells him “Calm down he'll be OK,” Gavin starts sob “I'm so sorry! I love you Timmy.” Kissing Tim's forehead, Tim opens his eyes and murmurs “I'm still here, I love you too, Gavin.” Tim passes out again but at this point the paramedics arrives and they take Tim away in the ambulance, Gavin goes to the hospital with him.
As the ambulance leaves the centre we see Brittas arriving, “What's happen?” He asks a sobbing Carol, “He saved my little Ben's life.” Brittas asks “Who?”, “Tim!” Carol cries. “I think we need to talk, Mr Brittas. Let me explain.” Laura tells Brittas. As they go to his office she tells him all about the nights events, “But it was 10 degrees below freezing last night! How did they survive?” Brittas asks, Laura tells him how Tim kept Ben warm while forgetting for his own well-being, just with that the phone rings, “Brittas here! It's Gavin; They say he'll be OK in a few days; once he is settled in on the ward; you'll be back to work. Don't worry Gavin, Laura has been telling me about Tim's courage and selfless act of bravery last night, our little hero needs our support, you stay with him until we can get someone else to come over and give you a break! You don't have to thank me Gavin.” Brittas hangs up, he turns to Laura and saying “What a team we have here, Tim, was about to give up his life for that of another person and Gavin supporting his friend in his time of need! It makes me feel so proud of the people I have the pleasure of working with!”
That night we find Tim in bed at the hospital with Gavin sitting by his side holding his hand, Tim is very weak, he has been sleeping most of the day, “Timmy, there is someone here to see you.” Gavin tells Tim, as he starts to wake, the curtains move and in walks little Ben carrying a teddy, he jumps up on the bed “I want you to have this uncle Timmy.” and hands the bear to Tim who can hardly keep back the tears “Thank you. Ben.” he responds as he puts his arms around Ben, “I love you.” they both say to each other, with that the whole centre staff walk in to see Tim. He is moved to tears as everyone comes up to him one by one and says how was great he was and a true hero, Brittas comes up last puts his hand on Tim's shoulder and tells him that he is a real hero and made him very proud, he turns to Gavin saying “You should be very proud to have a friend like this, someone who would put his life before that of another's.” Gavin replies “I am! and I love him!”, “We all do!” Brittas replies. Laura can see that Tim and Gavin want to be alone, so she says “OK everyone, I think, we should all go now and leave Tim to rest.” everyone except Gavin leaves, Brittas turns to Gavin and says “Are you not coming?” Gavin replies “No Mr Brittas, I'll make certain Tim is OK first.” Brittas leaves as Tim looks up at Gavin “I'm sorry for being an...” Gavin cuts him off by saying “I'm sorry for lying to you, I do love you!” Tim replies “I love you too!” They embrace.
After a few days, Tim was allowed out of hospital, he can only just walk, the frost bite he suffered to his legs is only miner but it has meant he has to use crutches for support while his legs heal fully. As the days go by Tim is getting fed up and frustrated staying at home on his own, while Gavin goes to work. Gavin wakes up on the mourning of the tenth day of Tim's convalesce, to find him fully dressed in the kitchen making breakfast “Gavin, I want to go into work today and nobody is going to stop me, I don't care if I have to sit around all day doing nothing at the centre, but I'm not sitting here on my own any longer! Go and get ready, while I finish getting breakfast ready.” Gavin walks off to the bedroom, he picks up the phone, “Hello Mr Brittas, it's Gavin, Tim wants to come in to work, he is fed up of being one his own all day, will you be able to sort something out? You will? Oh, Thank you Mr Brittas.”, He hangs up the phone. While Gavin is getting washed and dressed he hears an almighty crashing sound from the kitchen, He runs into the kitchen to find Tim on the floor in fits of laughter, “What happened?” Gavin asks as he picks up Tim “Well everything was ready for breakfast, when this dam fly came in through the window, I forgot I had these rotten things and went to hit it, the crutch flew forward knocking over the chair and it was like the start of a domino rally to the other chairs, with the last chair hitting side of the table and sending up a fork into the air, it stuck into the calender! On today!” Gavin puzzled “What about today?” Tim says still laughing “It was today 8 years ago we first went away together, to the fun fair, I had almost forgotten about it!” Gavin relived that Tim was OK, started to laugh while saying“I remember that week very well! What fun we had! What a laugh we had!”
They have a great breakfast chatting away about old times. Gavin looks at his watch “Oh hell we'll be late if we don't leave now! Come on if you are coming!” They rush out the flat and into the car “Are you certain about this Tim? The doctor said you had to take a month off!” Gavin asks concerned as Tim replies “Yes I am! I'll go mad if I have to stay on my own a moment longer! Start the car, lets go!”
They arrive at the centre, The whole team are at the entrance to see Tim arrive, As Gavin phoned ahead and Mr Brittas had told everyone they were coming. As Tim get out of the car and slowly makes his way up the path to the entrance he can hear cheers in his honer, it moves him, then he sees little Ben standing there at the front of the crowd, Tim gets within a few yards of him and falls to his knees, “Hello Ben!” he shouts and Ben comes running over to him and put his arms around him and says “Thank you, Uncle Timmy, for keeping me safe and warm and for looking after me that night, I will always love you!” Tim is crying as he cuddles Ben. Gavin come up behind them and picks up Ben in his right arm as he lifts Tim to his feet with his left. They walk on to the centre, people are crying and generally making a fuss over Tim and Ben.
Everything is going well until Tim sees Brittas standing there at the main doors, “Hello My Brittas.” Tim says “Hello Tim, how are you doing?” Brittas asks “I'm OK just getting fed up being my own all the time.” Tim replies, Brittas thinks for a moment “Well Tim, I can't allow you back to work yet. I have your doctors certificate that says, you will be off work until the end of the month.” All the staff groan and shout at Brittas that he's being unfair to Tim, but Brittas is not phased by it, just responds “I'm sorry Tim but rules are rules. Its the problem of insurance... you know.” Tim upset but understandingly says “It's OK, Mr Brittas, I understand, I just wanted to see...” but Bittas butts in before Tim has time to finish “But its not OK Tim! You need to be with your friends, You need to be with the people who care about you, so this is what we are going to do. I have been on the phone to the councillors and they have agreed with me, to allow you in to the centre on a visitors pass, until you are fit to work.” Tim is taken back “Oh, Thank You Mr Brittas” He puts his arms around Brittas “Thank You!” Brittas just holds Tim as he says” Don't mention it Tim, you are one of a team and we all help one and other. Come on lets get you inside.” Brittas helps Tim in to the centre.
Another week goes by Tim is still not able to work, but he has been in to the centre everyday, he is now off the crutches, he just sits in the staff room or the canteen with Ben, they both talk and write together. Gavin and Carol are talking at reception “I think Ben has found a new friend.” Gavin tells Carol, She replies “I think they have both found new friends! Do you know Gavin, Ben wouldn't write a thing until that night with Tim, now he can't stop, see this story he has written, 'Life in the Ventilation System, the night I was saved by my best friend'. He got a grade A+ for his English school work for this! He only ever got F's before!” Gavin asks “Has Tim seen this?” “No” Carol replies, “Let me show it to him!” Gavin asks and Carol agrees.
Tim has regained his strength and will be starting back at work again after the weekend, Gavin picks his moment and leaves Ben's Story on the kitchen table as he goes out to get the papers on the Sunday mourning, Tim awakes and goes in to the kitchen, he sees the note from Gavin telling him to read this story while he's getting the papers from the shop. Tim starts to read and can't believe what he is reading, its the story of the little boy who got stuck in a ventilation system and was saved by his best friend. It was just like his night with Ben. As Gavin returns he finds Tim in sobbing “Who wrote this?” Tim sobs to Gavin, “who do you think?” Gavin Replies “No, not Ben!” Tim enquires drying his eyes “Yes it was.” Gavin responds “And he got a grade A+ in his English school work for it too! For someone who doesn't like kids, I think you would have made a great Dad; Tim, I know Ben would agree!” They embrace in happiness together.
... Well there you have it, Mike, That was my first story and it was based on the true trail of how my best friend saved me from the cold that long night 30 years ago.” Mike asks “Do you stay in touch with Tim and Gavin?” Ben replies “Yes I do, and yes before you ask, they are still together!” Mike closes the interview saying “Well that's where we must leave it, My thanks go to Ben Parkinson, the world renowned best selling children's author of 2024. Next week my guests will be, Tim Whistler the world renowned chief and Gavin Featherleigh MP; I wonder could it be? Tim? Gavin? Well I afraid we will have to wait till next week to find out. Goodnight and thank you for watching, Goodnight!”
Carol asks “Sorry Carol, I haven't, I expect he's playing in the ventilation system again, he likes going up in there.” Colin replies, “Have you seen Tim today?” Gavin asks, Colin replies “I'm sorry Gavin!
I shouted, 'I'm not ready for this!', I didn't know what to do, I just started crying, but Ben was not phased by the rain, He just grabbed my coat from my bag and flew it over my head and then jumped back in the air duck, within ten minutes or so, the rain passed and to sky turned to stars.
