I was just watching some of the series last night and I had a real random thought... this show reminds me of a humorous non fiction version of Star Trek.
Brittas is Captain Kirk- always ready for action, getting himself into more trouble than he can handle and romantically involved (sometimes by accident) with every woman on the show.
Laura is Mr. Spock- The foundation of the crew, always logical and practical. Very close to the captain, even though they have their differences.
Julie is Dr. McCoy- Clever, witty and always ready with a quip or insult. Sometimes a bit skeptical of the captain's decisions and isn't afraid to let him know it.
Gavin is Mr. Sulu- Always ready at the helm to pick up where the captain has left off, in spite of how he feels about his judgement. Also a bit flamboyant at times.
Tim is Mr. Chekov- A skilled member of the team, but sometimes unaware of his full potential. Has aspirations of doing something greater, and sometimes struggles in communicating with the rest of the crew.
Colin is Mr. Scott- Salt of the earth, a brilliant engineer in his field and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. Does most of his work at the drop of a hat- sometimes with only a few shouted commands from the captain. Usually gets the blame for major disasters.
Linda is Lt. Uhura- Fit, enthusiastic, intelligent- a bit naive. Sort of a mascot of the ship. Definitely the most lovely sight on the deck.
Carole is the famous "Red Shirt" cadet- There's one in every episode. Each time they aspire for promotion, self improvement or just plain recognition something hideously wrong happens and it all blows up in their face- leaving the captain to save the day.
Helen is Kahn- Absolutely tormented by the mere existence of the captain. Usually when attempting to outwit or sneak around behind the captain's back, the tables are turned right back in her face- only to cause more anger and frustration with him. The captain is unaware of the neuroses he inflicts upon her.
...so there you have it. See where a bit of insomnia and some BE can take you?
