What's Tim's deal with private school? In 'The Chop' he gets upset about Gavin sending his (board games) kids to private school. And then in the episode from series 5 where they're fighting he says something like: "Is this because I went to private school?"
Did he have a traumatising time at school or something? Or is this explored further in series 6 and 7. I haven't seen them yet. Technically I haven't seen series 5... I'm supposed to be watching it with my friend - but I've been too impatient during the week to wait and having been watching little snippets here and there.
Perhaps his parents pushed him really hard as a child and he resented it or something...?

Gavin went to public school, Tim didn't.
The comment in series 5 is aimed at Tim's annoyance with Gavin for thinking that being a pool attendant is not good enough for Gavin, but is good enough for Tim - in that because Gavin went to public school, he's 'better' than Tim & shouldn't be doing a lowly job. As far as I can remember it's not mentioned again, but Tim obviously doesn't like public school (hence his annoyance for Gavin sending his kids there), for I think the same reason as he's the union rep - he sees himself as a worker (there's an element of implying he's working class, although his accent doesn't exactly bear that out) & looks down on management, & all the trappings of a public school education. (Jobs for the boys).
As for Tim's time at school, there's not much said apart from having to put up with the name Goebals.
Sorry - just read that back & it doesn't entirely make sense, but I'm too tired to retype.... Sorry...

Ah, now I understand my mistake. I just looked up 'british public schools' and there is a bit of ambiguity. In Australia, public schools are for the ordinary, working class, whereas private schools are the more prestigious, expensive ones. But apparently public and private schools are one and the same in Britain, right?
Perhaps I should've done this research before making this thread and I could've answered my own question...
But thanks for your response sev29. And you've got nothing to worry about - it made perfect sense to me.

Paulie - I should have checked where you were from before I wrote it - calling them public schools is misleading now I come to think about it, I should have clarified & said private. It's funny how when you grow up with a term you never even think about it being odd, but the way you use them in Australia makes much more sense. I always think that public schools are the elite of the private ones (Eton, Roedean, Harrow etc), but that might be just me. Certainly the implication is that Gavin comes from a wealthy background (the aunt who took him to school in her Rolls, I think it was), & Tim doesn't.
