So what was the real reason Laura didn't take the promotion at the end of this episode? Was this foreshadowing for her growing affection for Brittas - or did she simply not want to leave her garden? I was never quite sure myself what the reason was... Maybe it was something else altogether...

I always thought it was mainly down to her affection for Gordon. And she probably thought she had to stay at Whitbury as the place really needed her after all, as Helen pointed out.

But wasn't it Helen who said (and I don't remember the quote exactly): "Look around Gordon, she's got something to stay for..." which implies it was just the garden which was keeping Laura there...
Incidentally, how do you think Helen would react to finding out Laura had something of a thing for Gordon - and had kissed him on a couple of occasions?

To be honest, I don't think Helen would be that bothered. I'm pretty sure Laura doesn't leave for the same reason she suggests the European job to Brittas - she's thinking of the lives that would be saved......I don't think she's in love with Brittas - she can just see the good in him & gets frustrated that he can't let it out. Perhaps if he did let it out more often then her affection might change, but at the end of the day, it's Michael who she can't say no to.

I don't know because in Surviving Christmas Helen was trying to kill Carol cos she thought she was having an affair with Gordon but at one point in series 7 she's all but begging Julie to have an affair with him. She's crazy ;D
