:-/Meh...Nah. I just don't particularly like Linda.
And I don't think Brittas is the type of character that would have a threesome anyway. Morals and all that.
The only pairings I can see that'll work are the ones that might, or have been implied in the series.
Brittas/Laura Brittas/Carole Brittas/Julie Tim/Gavin Carole/Colin Helen/Gavin.
Anything else would just be weird...

And I don't think Brittas is the type of character that would have a threesome anyway. Morals and all that. Poly relationships aren't quite the same thing as threesomes. They certainly don't imply three people in a bed, or even that all three are involved. I have faith, in any case, in Gordon's beautiful ability to find an innocent explanation for anything Helen does. That used to really upset me when I was younger, and I hated her... I'm more forgiving of her for doing what she feels she needs to do to keep the relationship going, now. Surely that list should include Tim/Carole and at least one-sided Colin/Julie? ~grin~ And Gavin/Penny, although I think the writers were taking something during that episode, personally. I think a decent writer can make any pairing work, as long as they take the time to think about it and work on characterisation rather than just telling you they always wanted each other and leaving it at that... I'd find Colin/Gordon entirely believable, but I don't know if I'd ever read it. Otoh, I find Laura/Michael hard to swallow and it's canon. I just can't understand her accepting a relationship so far beneath her.

Are there any particular episodes where you can see a Helen/Gavin thing going on? I'll have to look for that when I finally get my hands on some DVDs! Jennie

Wasn't me who mentioned it, but as far as I'm concerned "Safety First" in S2, "The Boss" in S5 and - "Body Language"? Do I mean "Body Language"? The one in S6 where Gavin has the drops blinding him and Colin thinks the aliens are taking over dear heavens I hate S6 - at least indicate that Helen is attracted to Gavin, or at least that Gavin thinks she's attracted to him.. But then, pretty much everyone seems to be attracted to Gavin at some point or other. He has universal appeal.
Assuming you're a fellow Strayan, AusJenn. We're so far behind - I only just saw S2 in the shops today. I ended up giving in and ordering the lot from the UK -- not really much more expensive, and much better packaging. The Australian ones are ugly, but at least they fit a season per DVD instead of stretching them over two.

Thanks Kanna! I'm not in Australia, the name is a deliberate red herring . I'm actually in Austria so ordering from the UK isn't quite so expensive for me. However, I'm impoverished enough to have to wait until I next go over there to buy the DVDs. In the mean time I will continue to drool over the pictures that people have very kindly posted here . . . Hee, I have a bad habit of assuming; almost as bad as the people who ask Australian tourism places how to book tickets to see the Viennese Boy Choir. It's my lonely wanderings in search of fellow Strayan fen, you see. Any particular caps you want, to make up for it? ~thinks~ Helen stroking Gavin's knee might be appropriate.
UK DVDs are cheaper than here anyway, so even with postage it's not too bad.

I discovered the show around 1998 as I was channel surfing. The series was so crazy that I fascinated. And eventually hooked. The one thing I realized after a while is that although Mr. Brittas may be annoying, it's only because of his strict conviction of principle, uncompromising in what he beleives to be right and good. In that respect, everyone else are the misfits because they're pissed they can't goof off and do things the easy way.
One big example of this was Mr. Brittas's fund drive to get a trampoline. His idea of everybody working hard together to earn the money to get one is actually an admirable one. Everybody got annoyed because they wanted to get out of it the easy way.
Having Gavin and Tim being a gay couple was great because it was subtle and just another fact of life in the center. It wasn't made out to be a big deal and pushed in your face like how many American shows would do.
I loved the dynamic and sexual tension between Mr. Brittas and Laura, and while I would like them to get together, it wouldn't happen because of Mr. Brittas's uncompromising principles. He was married and Laura was married, but that doesn't stop him from dreaming about it. And that makes it funny.
It was touching to see how devoted Mr. Brittas is to Helen which can be seen so plainly in almost every episode. He was even willing to let go of his dream just for her. And that's just amazing.

The one thing I realized after a while is that although Mr. Brittas may be annoying, it's only because of his strict conviction of principle, uncompromising in what he believes to be right and good. In that respect, everyone else are the misfits because they're pissed they can't goof off and do things the easy way. That's not really the way I see it. Brittas is PC in the bad sense, in that he takes social norms and prejudices and applies them regardless of common sense or compassion, which is why you get situations like him insisting on muscling in on the pregnant women - chauvinism and invading women's space on the premise of spurious "feminism" - or his somewhat unpleasant bouts of homophobia. In either case I don't think it's principles at stake, but in the first case following the letter of the thing while not understanding the spirit, and in the second blindly enforcing cultural prejudices. (That slimy claim to be broad-minded while promoting the most damaging of homophobic pratices... ugh. I agree with Gavin that he deserved to die at that moment.) Or take the second episode: in his desire to appear non-racist he's actually behaving in a racist manner and betraying his own principles. On the other hand, you're right - he fundamentally means well and wants what's best, even if his idea of what's best is sometimes patently offensive. So I don't see the other people as being misfits rather than that they have the social skills, empathy and common sense to see when and how rules of behaviour should be applied, and which he so hilariously lacks. (Hope you don't take this as argument rather than discussion - I never get tired of discussing this show!) Best thing ever. The boys make me incredibly happy... and they were very important to me, growing up queer. That's so utterly darling. Yay for hopeless devotion. And I have to admit to horrible giggles that, loving her so much, he inadvertently makes her life complete hell. But one of the reasons i love S7 is that they seem to have come to terms - Helen is asserting herself, and their marriage seems much stronger and happier from her point of view - because it was always ideal from his.

Having posted elsewhere a few time, I thought I'd say Hello!
I remember I watched Red Dwarf when it first came out (mainly cos of the trailer where Lister tells Rimmer he was smoking a chicken) and from watching that series again on DVD I only missed one episode.
I can't remember when I started watching BE, but I do remember little bits from S1, so I probably caught some of it when it was first screened. I have a feeling that I watched it cos Chris was in it whom I'd obviously seen in RD. Not that I actually liked the character Rimmer much.
I must have missed more than that of BE as I don't remember much, just odd scenes. Either that or my memory's crap.
Why did I keep on watching and buy the DVDs? I think the character development, and Gavin and Tim, but definitely not the character of Gordon. I find him, his ideas and his actions loathsome, but beautifully portrayed.

You are SO BRAVE. ~slips a whistle into your hand just in case~ Agreed about the character development. I love the anarchic humour and the way things keep snowballing, but it's loving the characters so much that made me fall for the show.

Or Stupid!! There are a lot of characters in comedy who are particularly repulsive in the way they treat people, or their ideas.

Newbie Alert
Hi i'm Julie. I watched TBE from series one through to seven when it first came on TV. I fell in love with the whole Tim/Gavin relationship and Julia St John. Only just reprised my love affair with TBE since the DVD's started coming out. Trying to finish half-started fics, but moving out of home into my own batchelor pad soon, so time is limited - at the moment!
Brill message board - have really enjoyed reading my way through everything. More fics please too!

I think we have a new best friend, everyone. :-) If you love Julia St John, bys the way, a nice wee recommendation for you (by flip18, with some graphicy gubbins by me): www.flip18.co.uk/JSJ/index.htm Don't forget to check out the JSJ message board; links are on-site. I'm this board's resident JSJ-fanatic, along with flip18 and Xylona. You're welcome to join us. Especially if those unfinished fics of yours involve some Laura/Brittas. ;D
